Hiking the French Riviera

The Côte d’Azur made a name for itself in the 18th century with the British elite who, convinced by the health benefits of a milder climate, would travel to the south of France during winter. The proximity to Italy, with its cultural upper-class image, played a part in attracting the European aristocracy to the south-eastern coastal towns. During the 19th century, royalty and famous writers and actors would descend upon the Côte d’Azur, enhancing the image of the wealthy and glamourous place to be. This side of the French Riviera still very much exists today with the casinos, sports cars, horse racing and villas. But hiking the French Riviera with Intura merely grazes the materialistic, choosing instead to lead you into the backcountry, where authenticity, simplicity, and tranquility reign.

Why do we like the Côte d’Azur?

There are many answers to this question! But we’ll give you the 3 main ones. Firstly, there is so much more to the Côte d’Azur than the glitz and glamour of the coastal towns and villages. Hiking the French Riviera with Intura is heading inland, into the rural backcountry, with beautiful hiking trails, remote hamlets and authentic villages. Secondly, we love the Côte d’Azur because of the cultural mix of French and Italian in the architecture, the food and the way of life. On our French Riviera walking tours, you can easily hop over the border and spend the afternoon in Italy! Why explore only one country when you can two! And finally, the proximity to Nice international airport is a real bonus. Hikers from all over the world can come and enjoy the walks and explore this beautiful region of France.
