What to see on your walking holiday in the Azores
The Azores is an archipelago made up of 9 Portuguese islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Discovered in the early 14th century, the islands were not inhabited until the 15th century. The first settlers were the Portuguese from the region of Alentejo and also the Flemish from Belgium. Spread across several hundreds of kilometres, these islands are a hidden gem in the middle of the ocean and have only recently opened up to tourism. They developed mainly due to farming, cattle, fishing and whaling. A walking holiday in the Azores is certainly a unique experience, a chance to get up close and personal with volcanos, crater lakes and white sandy beaches.
